Naomi Osaka made a notable comeback at the 2024 US Open after taking time off for maternity leave. She started her campaign with an impressive victory over the 10th seed, Jelena Ostapenko, winning 6-3, 6-2. This was her first match at Flushing Meadows since becoming a mother, and she showcased her signature powerful playing style, characterized by strong serves and aggressive baseline shots. Osaka managed to dominate the match, demonstrating her ability to control the pace and dictate play against a formidable opponent like Ostapenko Tennis.com

Naomi Osaka achieved a significant milestone on Tuesday by defeating a top 10 player for the first time in over four years. She claimed an impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of the US Open. Osaka’s performance was as striking as the giant green bow she sported as part of her outfit, overpowering the No. 10 seed Ostapenko with a series of powerful serves and commanding plays.

Now ranked No. 88 in the world, Osaka displayed some of her best tennis since returning from maternity leave earlier this season. The two-time US Open champion unleashed 19 winners, including nine aces, while committing just five unforced errors. Reflecting on her journey back to the court, Osaka admitted she was emotional as she stepped onto Louis Armstrong Stadium, recalling the challenges she faced while away from the game. “I remember last year I was watching Coco [Gauff] play and I so badly wanted to step on these courts again and I didn’t know if I could,” she shared in her on-court interview. “I didn’t know athletically, physically if I was able to, and just to win this match and be in this atmosphere means so much to me.”

Osaka’s return to tennis has seen a number of high points in 2024, including a victory in her first match back, her first Wimbledon win since 2018, and a quarterfinal appearance at a WTA 1000 event. However, the four-time Grand Slam champion has been open about the difficulties she has encountered since returning to the sport after giving birth. In a recent Instagram post, Osaka expressed that she doesn’t “feel like I’m in my body” and has been missing shots she wouldn’t have before.

As she prepares for her second-round match against 2023 semifinalist Karolína Muchová, Osaka is determined to focus and enjoy herself on the court. “I think just keep focusing, keep trying to play really well, but overall have a lot of fun,” she said. She also shared a personal moment with her daughter, who had trouble sleeping the night before her match, highlighting the balance she is trying to maintain between motherhood and professional tennis. “Moments like that are so precious to me, and I just can only hope that I can keep having more,” she added.

Osaka also discussed her bold outfit choices, which included green bows on her sneakers and a distinctive ribbon, saying she feels more “flamboyant” in New York compared to other tournaments. “I feel like being able to be a part of my tennis outfits gives me a different strength,” she explained. “Especially the US Open outfits, I feel like they are a little bit more flamboyant.” Embracing her unique style, she noted, “You know what, embrace this maximalist style.”

    • Osaka’s playing style has often been described as aggressive, relying on her strong serve and forehand to gain quick points. She mentioned, “I’m not, like, stepping on the baseline trying to whack the ball every time,” indicating a more strategic approach to her game rather than just power hitting US Open
    • Her performance in the US Open has always been strong, having won the tournament twice before, in 2018 and 2020. Her return to form this year signals a potential deep run in the tournament, aiming to add another Grand Slam title to her record. Her matches have often been characterized by resilience and the ability to raise her game during crucial points, a trait that has helped her secure significant wins on big stages like the US Open Tennis.com
