Karen Read Claims Conspiracy in Boyfriend’s Death, As Legal Battle Continues

Karen Read, a Massachusetts woman charged with the shocking death of her police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, is now claiming she’s been framed in what she describes as a wide-reaching conspiracy. In her first media appearance, speaking with ABC’s 20/20, Read, 44, laid out her belief that law enforcement has pinned her with the crime—painting a portrait of cover-ups and misdirection surrounding the tragic events of January 2022.

#ABC2020 cameras captured Karen Read in April 2024, days before her trial began. Read said she was staying in a hotel room near the courthouse so she could prepare for trial with her lawyers. pic.twitter.com/PDWn3WBG5a

The accusation is as chilling as it is puzzling. Read is accused of fatally running over 46-year-old O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him outside in freezing temperatures after a night of heavy drinking. O’Keefe had been dropped off at the home of retired officer Brian Albert, where a party was in full swing. When Read, along with a few friends, returned to search for him the next morning, they discovered his lifeless body outside the house.

“I jumped out of the car and fell into the street… his eyes were closed, spots of blood here and there on his face. He wasn’t stiff, but he was still,” Read recalled with emotion during the interview. “It was cold… I wasn’t in danger, but he was… and I couldn’t warm him up.” The image of finding O’Keefe like that—helpless and cold—haunts her.

The defense, however, has taken an unexpected turn, suggesting that O’Keefe’s injuries didn’t come from Read’s SUV at all but rather from an altercation inside the house. They argue that O’Keefe was the victim of a violent encounter, not a hit-and-run, pointing to trauma to his head and hands that would be more consistent with a physical attack. Their theory? A conspiracy within the police department—an orchestrated attempt to shift blame to Read, sparing others at the party from scrutiny.

Anyone watch the 20/20 on #KarenRead last night? Was wondering how it was and your thoughts if she is guilty or not..my gut says no..

One piece of evidence stands at the center of the case—a shattered tail light from Read’s Lexus SUV. Shards of that broken light were discovered on O’Keefe’s body, a detail prosecutors argue proves she ran him over. But Read’s defense team has continuously challenged this narrative, raising questions about how those fragments got there and why the positioning of the injuries doesn’t line up with a vehicular accident.

Then there’s the added layer of Read’s blood alcohol level on the night of the incident—well over the legal limit—and the angry voicemails she left O’Keefe, accusing him of cheating, filled with venomous words. For prosecutors, these are not just minor details—they paint a picture of a volatile relationship, where a tragic accident might have been born out of a drunken rage.

When asked by 20/20 whether she could have accidentally struck O’Keefe with her SUV, given her admitted state of intoxication, Read was adamant. “No… not possible,” she said, dismissing any suggestion that she could have unwittingly caused his death.

The legal battle continues to twist and turn. Read was charged with second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter, but her trial, which began in July, ended in a mistrial. Another trial is set for January, and it promises to be just as contentious. The case has sparked public outcry, drawing large crowds of protesters from both sides. Supporters of Read have been vocal, rallying around her, and in a surreal moment caught on camera, Read even likened the protests to anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. “You’re brave,” she told her supporters. “This is the modern equivalent of ending a war.”

As the trial looms, questions hang in the air… Did Read unknowingly play a role in her boyfriend’s death, or is there a deeper, darker conspiracy at play? Either way, this tragic case continues to captivate, with no clear end in sight.

    Major Points

    • Karen Read, accused of fatally running over her boyfriend, Officer John O’Keefe, now claims she’s been framed in a law enforcement cover-up.
    • O’Keefe was found dead outside a party in January 2022, but Read’s defense suggests his injuries resulted from an altercation inside the house.
    • Prosecutors point to shattered tail light fragments from Read’s SUV on O’Keefe’s body as evidence of a hit-and-run, which Read vehemently denies.
    • Read’s intoxicated state and angry voicemails are key parts of the prosecution’s case, portraying a volatile relationship.
    • After a mistrial in July, a new trial is set for January, with both sides preparing for another contentious legal showdown.
