Stellantis has issued a recall for over 1.2 million of its Ram 1500 trucks due to a potentially dangerous software malfunction in the anti-lock brake system (ABS). The recall affects Ram 1500 models from 2019 and 2021 through 2024, after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) flagged the issue. The malfunction could cause the ABS control module to disable the electronic stability control (ESC) system, which helps drivers maintain control during difficult driving conditions. Without the ESC, the risk of crashes increases significantly.

In addition to the recalled trucks, Stellantis is also recalling 7,299 MOPAR ABS units that were used as replacement parts in the affected vehicles. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries linked to the defect have been reported so far, according to Stellantis.

The company plans to notify affected owners by mail, urging them to bring their vehicles to dealerships for a free ABS software update. Stellantis emphasized the importance of resolving the issue to ensure the trucks meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 126, which regulates electronic stability control systems.

The recall isn’t limited to the U.S. alone—158,670 vehicles are being recalled in Canada, 13,419 in Mexico, and 61,072 in markets outside of North America. Owners of affected vehicles will start receiving notification letters on October 3, and Stellantis encourages them to promptly schedule repairs. The company has provided a customer service number for further assistance.

Stellantis took swift action to avoid any risks on the road, ensuring customers that they are prioritizing safety with the recall. If you own a Ram 1500 from the specified model years, it’s crucial to check whether your truck is part of the recall using your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website.
