Harvey Weinstein, a Hollywood veteran, was found a Manhattan courtroom on Wednesday, pleading not guilty to a fresh allegation— criminal sexual act in the first degree. This latest accusation is thrown to him by a woman who alleges Weinstein assaulted her in a hotel of Manhattan back in 2006.

In a black suit and tie, the 72-year-old former producer sat quietly, as the legal process added another layer to the already vast network of charges and accusations that have entangled him in recent years. This case is added to previous ones, including first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape, stemming from a 2020 conviction that was later overturned.

Harvey Weinstein, faces another criminal sexual charge, from 2006 in a Manhattan hotel.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg, addressing the case, praised the courage of the latest survivor for coming forward. “Thanks to her bravery, Weinstein now faces yet another indictment for alleged sexual violence,” Bragg stated. Weinstein, as he has repeatedly done, denies the charges, maintaining that all encounters were consensual. His attorney, Arthur Aidala, reiterated this after the hearing, saying, “Weinstein has been consistent—he never forced himself on anyone.”

The woman related to the last added allegation, referred to as Jane Doe, has chosen to remain anonymous but is prepared to testify in court. Her lawyer, Lindsay Goldbrum, says Jane Doe wishes to hold Weinstein accountable for his actions.

This new charge arrives months after Weinstein’s 23-year prison sentence was turned down. The New York Court of Appeals found that his initial trial had improperly allowed uncharged allegations to influence the jury. However, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office retries the case and started supporting the survivors.

For Weinstein, the courtroom battles continue and it looks like the process is far from over, and the legal fight continues to loom large over his legacy.

    Major Points

    • Weinstein pleaded not guilty to a new charge of criminal sexual act in the first degree, stemming from an alleged 2006 assault in a Manhattan hotel.
    • The fresh indictment adds to a string of charges, including a 2020 conviction that was overturned earlier this year.
    • District Attorney Alvin Bragg praised the bravery of the latest accuser, referred to as Jane Doe, who remains anonymous but is prepared to testify.
    • Weinstein, through his attorney Arthur Aidala, continues to deny all allegations, insisting any encounters were consensual.
    • Despite his overturned conviction, Weinstein’s legal battles are ongoing as the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office remains committed to retrying the case.
